Conservatory Reroof and Terrace Renovation Project 2024-2025

As River Bend Nature Center approaches its 30th anniversary, we’re embarking on an exciting journey to breathe new life into our cherished facilities. River Bend needs your help to restore the Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory and the J.S. Bridwell Terrace and revitalize them for future generations.

The Conservatory Renovation will add new interactive exhibits that celebrate the wonders of science and nature as well as address critical issues like leaks, insulation, and air circulation. These improvements will make the Conservatory more resilient, reduce utility costs, and create an even more engaging experience for visitors and students.

The Terrace Renovation will install STEAM-focused, hands-on exhibits and enhance accessibility, control erosion, and improve lighting and shading. This transformation will provide a dynamic and interactive space for learning and exploration.

Your support of the Conservatory Reroof and Terrace Renovation Project will ensure River Bend remains a vibrant destination for connecting people with nature. Join us in making this vision a reality!

Phase 1A – J.S. Bridwell Terrace Drainage – Completed!

Phase 1A is essential for improving safety, accessibility, and environmental resilience at River Bend Nature Center. Replacing crushed granite with concrete will create smoother, more durable, and ADA-compliant pathways, enhancing accessibility for all visitors. Upgrading trench drains and adding drainage pipes with rip rap will mitigate erosion and prevent water damage, ensuring the long-term stability of the terrace and surrounding trails. Installing a fence to separate public and maintenance areas will improve visitor safety. These improvements address critical infrastructure needs and contribute to the Center’s overall functionality and sustainability.

Phase 1B – Ruby N. Priddy Conservatory – started 1/2025

Phase 1B of the renovation is critical for addressing the structural, operational, and educational needs of the Conservatory. Replacing the aged, leaking, difficult-to-maintain glass panels and aluminum framing with a standing seam metal roof and insulation will enhance durability, improve energy efficiency, and reduce maintenance and insurance costs. Adding new gutters and integrating them into the drainage system will prevent water damage while cleaning the glass and steel structure will restore its aesthetic appeal and functionality.

Installing ceiling fans and repairing plumbing leaks will improve climate control and operational efficiency. Replacing the resinous soil pathway with stamped concrete will provide a safer, more durable, and ADA-compliant surface for visitors. Upgrading tube lighting will enhance visibility and energy efficiency. Paving the existing beds and adding new exhibits will create opportunities for hands-on, STEAM-focused learning, enriching the educational experience. Together, these upgrades ensure the Conservatory remains a sustainable, engaging, and accessible space for all visitors.

Phase 1C – Ruby N. Priddy Conservatory – estimated start date 12/2025 (pending funding)

Phase 1C is critical for maintaining the Ruby N. Priddy Conservatory’s functionality and visitor experience. Replacing the aging 130-ton condensing unit, which is nearing the end of its 20-year lifespan, ensures reliable climate control in the glass-structured Conservatory. Without this replacement, a failure of the air conditioning system could lead to unsafe temperatures for visitors, staff, and exhibits, jeopardizing the Conservatory’s role as a year-round educational and recreational space. The new unit will enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and provide a stable environment for exhibits, ensuring the facility remains sustainable and accessible for years to come.

Phase 2 – J.S. Bridwell Terrace Play Area – (pending funding)

Phase 2 is essential for creating a more engaging, comfortable, and sustainable environment for visitors. Adding shade devices will enhance comfort and accessibility by providing relief from the sun, especially during warmer months. Incorporating native vegetation will promote ecological sustainability, reduce maintenance needs, and provide educational opportunities about local flora. Restoring exterior lighting will improve safety and extend the usability of the space into the evening. Restoring water connections to terrace beds will support the health of plantings and allow for enhanced landscaping. Finally, adding new hands-on exhibits will enrich the educational experience, aligning with River Bend’s mission to connect people with nature. This phase transforms the terrace into an interactive, welcoming space that supports learning, play, and environmental stewardship.
