Community Service FAQ’s

How many hours are you required to work a day?

Since we only schedule 2 workers a day, the minimum is 3 hours. You can work the full day if you wish.

How many community service workers do you accept a day?

Only two workers are scheduled per day. Scheduling begins at 10 am, and it is first-call first-scheduled.

Do you have severe allergies?

RBNC has cats (free range), ferrets, rats, and the great outdoors. If you have severe allergies please complete your hours at another location.

How do I receive double time?

Double hours will be given on a case by case basis at the discretion of your supervisor.

Do I have to wear a mask?

You have to wear a mask at all times, both inside and outside the facility. It must cover your nose and mouth completely. If you are seen without wearing your mask appropriately you will be asked to leave.

COVID-19 Protocols

Coronavirus (COVID-19) WARNING & DISCLAIMER: Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an extremely contagious virus that spreads easily through person-to-person contact. Federal and state authorities recommend social distancing as a means to prevent the spread of the virus. COVID-19 can lead to severe illness, personal injury, permanent disability, and death. Participating in community service at River Bend Nature Center or accessing River Bend Nature Center facilities could increase the risk of contracting COVID-19. River Bend Nature Center in no way warrants that COVID-19 infection will not occur through participation in community service at River Bend Nature Center Educational Programs or by accessing River Bend Nature Center facilities.         

Do not come to RBNC for community service if you are experiencing any of the symptoms below:

  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Known close contact with a person who has been lab-confirmed COVID-19 within the last 7 days
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache

What kind of activities will I be doing?

Most activities are related to cleaning and maintaining the center.

Work will be assigned one task at a time and will be checked by an RBNC employee before another assignment is given.  If the task is not done correctly, you will be asked to redo the work before given another assignment. If this continues to happen, you will no longer be eligible to complete your hours at RBNC.

How do I get on the schedule?

You must fill out a community service application either online (see below) or in person. Check-in at the Gift Shop and they will give you the forms. After your application has been approved, you can call 940-767-0843 after 10:00 a.m. on the day that you want to work. Available slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You can schedule your hours between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. Community service will not be scheduled during field trips or other events.

What is the dress code?

Our dress code is the same as school dress code. Tank tops, inappropriate t-shirts, caps or hats with inappropriate logos, and pajamas cannot be worn. Tattoos and piercings must be covered. Shorts must be knee length. Appropriate undergarments must be worn and adequately covered. Shoes must be appropriate for outdoor work. Flip flops are not allowed.  Extreme hair color must be covered. If someone shows up dressed inappropriately, they will be sent home to change and may return if they come back dressed appropriately.

Any RBNC employee may tell CS to go home if they are dressed inappropriately.

    Time

    Work

    • You are not allowed to bring other people to work with you.

    • You should always watch the content of your conversations and be mindful that we are open to the public while you are here.

    • Breaks are allowed, but you are required to tell the person working in the gift shop that you are on break. You also need to check in with the front desk when you go off break.

    • If you are caught not working without being on a break you can be asked to go home by any RBNC employee and you will no longer be placed on the schedule.

    • Smoking, tobacco products, and e-cigs are not allowed in the buildings or on the trails.

    Personal Belongings

    • Cell phones are not to be used except in case of emergencies.

    • Headphones/earbuds must be either around the neck or in/on one ear.

    Security

    • The doors to the back offices will remain locked. If you need in the back as part of your assignment you must have an RBNC employee unlock the door for you and an employee must be present while you are in the back. Bathroom and Pavilion keys must be checked out and returned to the gift shop.
